What these terms mean

Status

Rolling · accepts applications year-round, no fixed deadline.

Upcoming · intake opens on a set date or runs seasonally.

Funding type

Grant · money you do not repay, usually tied to a defined project or cost.

Loan · money you borrow and repay, often at better-than-market terms.

Tax credit · reduces the tax you owe, claimed on your return; not cash up front.

Wage subsidy · covers part of an employee's wages for a set period.

Voucher · a credit toward a specific service or supplier.

Equity · investment in exchange for a stake in your business.

Service / advisory · expertise, mentorship, or support rather than money.

Who runs it (level)

Federal · a Government of Canada program.

Provincial · a provincial or territorial government program.

Crown · a government-owned corporation (for example BDC or EDC). A "Crown loan" is a loan from one of these.

Municipal · a city or regional program.

Foundation · a non-government funder.

Repayable

No · not paid back (grants and credits).

Partial · part is repayable.

Yes · repaid (loans).

Access

Apply through a partner · the funder doesn't take applications directly from businesses. It channels the money through an intermediary (a non-profit, an Aboriginal Financial Institution, a lender, or a university) that you work with to access it. Start with that partner, not the funder.

Confirm current details · a specific detail (intake window or cap) was not confirmed at last check; verify on the official page before relying on it.

Match my business

Capital you don't know exists.

Every year, Canadian small-business funding goes unclaimed. The programs are scattered across dozens of sites, and eligibility is rarely clear from the outside. The match tells you honestly, program by program, whether you can apply directly or need a partner.

No application. Just the match.

How the match works

  1. 01What you do. Your sector and the kind of funding that fits: grant, loan, tax credit, wage subsidy.
  2. 02What you need it for. Working capital, equipment, hiring, R&D, expansion. Matching on need drops the programs you don't qualify for.
  3. 03Who it's for. Programs designed for specific communities, surfaced when they apply to you.
  4. 04The honest read. Every program shows the real access path: apply directly, partner with an eligible non-profit, or not directly eligible.
